Goal and audience
Create a fictional service offer, proposal scope, onboarding plan, business trial and price estimate.
This self-directed practice path is for learners who want an organised way to use existing Digest resources. It is not an enrolled course, a qualification or a certificate programme.
Before you start
One skill you can describe honestly and a fictional client brief. A notebook or document editor is sufficient; no paid platform account is required.
As an RDE planning estimate, allow around 30 to 60 minutes for each step, or roughly 2.5 to 5 hours in total. Your pace and prior experience will affect the time needed. Pause and repeat a step when its review question remains unanswered.
How to use the path
Follow the steps in order. Each resource opens in a new tab; keep this path open and return here for the activity and review question. Previous and next links move between steps on this page. Record your own notes and outputs privately. This page does not track, save or certify completion; account-based progress tracking is deferred.
Step 1 of 5: Define a service offer
Open resource: Turn a Freelance Skill into a Clear Service Offer Opens in a new tab.
Practice
Choose a task you can perform and a fictional client need. Describe the deliverable, intended user, boundaries and evidence that supports your ability to do the work.
Produce
A short service offer with explicit exclusions.
Review before moving on
Is the offer a clear deliverable rather than a promise of guaranteed business results?
Step 2 of 5: Draft proposal scope
Open resource: Define Freelance Proposal Scope Before Agreeing the Work Opens in a new tab.
Practice
Use the resource to describe inputs, deliverables, review points and how changes would be discussed. Record questions that need agreement before starting the fictional engagement.
Produce
A scoped proposal outline and open questions.
Review before moving on
Could both parties identify what is included, what is excluded and what requires a separate decision?
Step 3 of 5: Prepare onboarding
Open resource: Freelance Client Onboarding Toolkit Opens in a new tab.
Practice
Use the toolkit to prepare a kickoff agenda, information request and communication plan. Use fictional details only and record how permissions and confidential information would be handled.
Produce
An onboarding pack for the fictional engagement.
Review before moving on
Are the required inputs, responsibilities and first review point clear?
Step 4 of 5: Plan a small trial
Open resource: Plan a Small Digital Business Trial Before Expanding Opens in a new tab.
Practice
Choose a bounded way to test the service offer. Define what evidence to collect, what would prompt a revision and what would make you stop or seek advice. Do not spend money merely to complete this exercise.
Produce
A trial plan with a review decision.
Review before moving on
Does the plan test a specific uncertainty without assuming demand or profitability?
Step 5 of 5: Check a price estimate
Open resource: Estimate a Freelance Project Price from Costs and Time Opens in a new tab.
Practice
Enter fictional hours, a chosen charging rate, direct costs and contingency in the calculator. Record the assumptions and compare the estimate with your scope. Keep tax, market and contract decisions separate.
Produce
An indicative estimate with assumptions and a scope review.
Review before moving on
Can you explain the estimate without presenting it as a guaranteed profit or a market-approved price?
Review your practice pack
Bring the five outputs together. For each, record the date, what you produced, the evidence you checked and the next amendment. Ask a trusted reviewer for specific feedback where possible. Completing the sequence means you have attempted these practice activities; it does not establish job readiness, professional competence or accreditation.

- A trial plan with a review decision. Record: attempted, reviewed or needs further work.
- An indicative estimate with assumptions and a scope review. Record: attempted, reviewed or needs further work.
Select one improvement and set a realistic review date. Return to the relevant step when your evidence or understanding changes.
