Choose one question
Identify the uncertainty you need to explore before committing more time or resources. State the customer group and the offer being examined. A useful question might concern whether intended customers understand a service description or find a prototype useful.
In a fictional example, a freelancer is considering a preparation workbook for event organisers. The first question is whether a small group of relevant people can use it to assemble the required information. This is different from proving that a large market exists.
Set the trial boundary
Describe the smallest practical activity that can inform the question. Business.gov.uk discusses testing an idea with a basic version of an offer and using feedback to improve it. Keep the scope, time and resource limit visible.
Use a fictional workbook prototype for practice. Decide which features are included, who will review it and what is outside scope. Do not assume that enthusiasm from friends establishes willingness to pay among intended customers.
Define the evidence
Write what you will observe and how you will record it. Distinguish feedback, task completion and actual commercial behaviour. Choose a review date and keep limitations visible, including a small sample or a trial that does not involve real purchases.
The exercise might record which instructions reviewers misunderstand and which fields they leave incomplete. These observations can guide revision. They do not automatically establish profitability or predict how every customer will respond.
Review before expanding
Download the PDF or Word template. Record the trial question, activity, limits, evidence and decision rule. At the review, choose whether to revise, investigate further, stop or proceed with a defined next step.
Use fictional examples for practice. Apply the relevant approval, privacy and professional advice processes before running a real commercial trial. Income and business growth are uncertain; the aim is to make a measured decision using the evidence available.
