Clarify the requested work
Write the client task in plain language and confirm your understanding before drafting the proposal. Separate the requested output from broader goals that you cannot control. Identify unanswered questions rather than filling them with assumptions.
In a fictional assignment, an organiser requests an event page. The page may support communication, but the designer cannot promise ticket sales. The practical request concerns presenting approved event information and a booking route.
Record deliverables and dependencies
Describe the output, format and included work. Note what the client must supply and when it is needed. A dependency such as approved wording can affect the schedule, so make it visible while discussing the proposal.
Record exclusions such as campaign management or maintenance. Explain how new requests would be reviewed. Use the workbook to prepare a conversation; do not represent this learning aid as a legal contract.
Agree review arrangements
Identify who provides feedback, which version is reviewed and how completion will be assessed. Describe a practical review boundary and record any open question about changes. Keep timing conditional where required inputs have not been confirmed.
Business.gov.uk describes planning how a business will operate. This workbook applies that planning idea to one fictional service task. It helps make the work explicit without prescribing commercial terms or claiming that every client arrangement is the same.
Check the proposal record
Download the PDF or Word workbook and complete it with fictional details. Ask another person to identify the deliverables, exclusions, inputs and review route. Resolve unclear wording before adapting the record for an authorised discussion.
Keep sensitive client information in approved systems. Obtain appropriate advice for binding commercial arrangements when needed. Clear scope supports a useful discussion, but it does not guarantee agreement, payment or a successful business outcome.
Source and practice note
The official guidance provides background. Examples, exercises and record layouts are original RDE learning material. Use fictional details for practice and follow your organisation’s approval and information-handling procedures.
