Use this reflection
Review how you prepare a goal, examples and questions for mentoring. Use six prompts to plan a focused conversation and a practical follow-up action.
Think about your recent practice. Choose the rating that best matches what you can currently demonstrate, rather than the answer you would like to give.
Ratings and scoring
Answer all six prompts. Each answer contributes equally: 0 = not yet or unsure; 1 = started, but need support; 2 = can do this with some checking; 3 = can demonstrate this consistently. Total: 0–18. There are no right answers and no pass mark.
- 0–6: Start with one practical habit.
- 7–12: Strengthen consistency through practice.
- 13–18: Review your evidence and maintain your habits.
These are RDE editorial reflection bands, chosen to group the equal-weight ratings. They are not validated thresholds, comparisons with other people or a diagnostic assessment. Two people with the same total may need different actions. Review your lowest-rated prompt first.
Questions and a practical next step
- I can state a practical goal for my next mentoring conversation.
Choose one issue within your influence and write the outcome you want from the conversation.
- I bring a specific example rather than only a general description of the difficulty.
Prepare a brief example with the situation, what you tried and what happened.
- I prepare questions that invite discussion rather than asking somebody to make every decision for me.
Write two open questions about options, trade-offs or practice.
- I identify what I tried between sessions and what I learnt from it.
Bring a short record of one action, its result and a question it raised.
- I am ready to discuss feedback and clarify what I do not understand.
Prepare a question that checks your understanding. Decide how you could test a suggestion.
- I leave with a manageable action and an agreed review point.
Record one next action, the evidence you will bring back and a realistic review date.
Turn reflection into practice
Choose one suggested action from your lowest-rated prompts. On your own paper, record what you will try, when you will review it and what evidence you will look for. You may revisit the tool after practising. A changed self-rating is a conversation starter, not proof of improvement.
Limitations and data handling
This reflection does not assess a mentor, guarantee a mentoring outcome or require you to disclose personal difficulties. All questions and scoring are original RDE learning prompts. The source below supports the topic, not the scoring system.
The interactive assessment processes answers in this browser only. It does not send your answers, store them in cookies or browser storage, or add them to an account. Reset clears the answers and results; reloading also clears them. The website still receives ordinary page requests. Do not enter passwords, client information or personal details. If JavaScript is unavailable, use the questions and scoring instructions above on paper.
