Use this checklist before your next review
This RDE checklist is a meeting aid for a small project team. APM describes risk management as addressing uncertainty, including threats and opportunities, and using a risk register to document analysis, responses and action ownership. Adapt the checklist to your organisation’s risk process.
Before the meeting
- Confirm the objective, scope and decisions needed.
- Check that current risk records have an owner.
- Ask owners for updates and supporting evidence.
- Identify new uncertainties and changes to existing risks.
- Separate an event that has already happened from a future uncertainty.
- Include opportunities as well as threats.
During the review
- Describe each uncertainty and the objective it could affect.
- Check whether the current assessment still has a sound basis.
- Discuss response options and who has authority to decide.
- Agree a specific action, action owner and due date.
- Record the trigger or condition that would require escalation.
- Check whether the proposed response creates another risk.
After the meeting
- Update the register and decision record.
- Share actions with the people responsible.
- Confirm the escalation route for urgent changes.
- Schedule the next review and follow up overdue actions.
Illustrative example
A supplier may deliver equipment late. Record what could happen, which activity it would affect and the evidence behind the assessment. An action could be to confirm the supplier’s delivery schedule by an agreed date. If equipment has already missed its delivery date, manage the current problem through your issue process while reviewing any remaining uncertainty.
