Identify what is being reviewed
Record the task, tool or version where known, input source and intended reader. Explain whether the result is an internal draft or material proposed for wider use. A reviewer needs this context to judge which errors matter.
Use a fictional meeting summary for practice. The reviewer should have both the original notes and the draft. Reading the draft alone cannot reveal every omission or change in meaning.
Check facts and references
Compare names, dates, quantities and stated decisions with the source. Open relevant references through an appropriate trusted route and check whether they actually support the claim. A plausible citation is not evidence by itself.
Generative AI can produce inaccurate content. NIST provides a risk-management framework and a companion profile for generative AI. This checklist is an introductory RDE aid rather than a complete implementation of those resources.
Check meaning and suitability
Look for missing conditions, unsupported certainty and wording that changes the original meaning. Review whether the draft treats people appropriately and suits its intended audience. Check for material that should not appear in the final version.
For the fictional notes, a proposed action must not become an approved decision simply because the draft is concise. Mark unclear items and refer them back to the responsible person. Do not silently repair an ambiguity by guessing.
Record the review decision
Decide whether to accept, revise, reject or escalate the draft within the approved workflow. Record the reviewer and remaining issues. Review should be a meaningful check, with time and authority to intervene.
Download the PDF or Word checklist. Use it on fictional material and compare your findings with a second reviewer. This aid does not certify accuracy or approve use of a tool for sensitive decisions.
Source and practice note
NIST AI risk-management resources provide the background for considering risks and evaluating AI outputs. The fictional examples and exercises are original RDE learning material.
